School District Uses Solar to Save $700,000 Per Year – a.k.a more money for kids!

My fellow U.S.Green Building Council Steering Committee members pulled together an excellent program this week.  It featured the leadership of Dr. Steven E. Keller, Superintendent of Schools for Redondo Beach, and his team who described how the district reduced energy costs by $600- $800k/ year!  The system will have a payback within 7 to 10 years (faster if utility rates increase) and the panels have a 25 year warranty and a 40 year projected life.

This smart investment hedges the district’s inflation for the next 40 years and gives the students a learning lab of the future that they can see working every time they come to school.  Well done!  It is nice to know the visionaries are out there getting it done at scale.

We hope other school districts and municipalities are listening. There is a great opportunity to create jobs and reduce costs as well as fossil fuel particulate that causes heart disease, lung disease and cancer.
